Russo-Ukrainian War
I Do Not Stand with Ukraine nor Russia
While the situation in Ukraine is complex, I do not align myself with either side in this conflict. Here's why I take this stance.
Why I condemn Russia's actions
Russia's invasion of Ukraine in both 2022 and 2014 has resulted in widespread suffering and displacement of innocent civilians, including ethnic Ukranians who are now under Russian control. After the first Ukrainian war, Russia's continued aggression has not only violated international law but has also threatened the rights, identity, and safety of the ethnic Ukrainians in occupied territories. This aggression cannot and will not be justified.
Why I am cautious in supporting Ukraine
Ukraine, while a victim, has long struggled with political corruption and governance issues since the first Russo-Ukrainian war. The unresolved internal problems raise concerns about how effectively external support is used and whether it truly benefits the Ukrainian people, especially those most affected by the conflict. Supporting Ukraine without addressing these issues risks endorsing practices that contradict principles of transparency, democracy and good governance.
What I believe should be done
Instead of taking sides, I advocate for focusing on supporting peace initiatives that prioritise the well-being of all civilians, including ethnic Ukrainians under Russian rule and Russians caught in the conflict. It's crucial to hold all governments accountable, whether it's Russia, Ukraine or even alliances, such as NATO, for their roles in continuing the war. The focus should be on ending the aggression, death and suffering. We should seek a balanced solution (yes, I'm very aware that finding such a solution would prove challenging, and a "balanced solution" could possibly never fully satisfy each side) that addresses both the external invasion and Ukraine's internal issues since the first conflict.
